This work explores the linguistic diversity of contemporary spoken Irish and the values that are linked, explicitly and covertly, to that diversity. Although the traditional Gaeltacht dialects have a clear prestige, it is argued that there is particular value in post-traditional language practices that are widespread and spreading, but not under an obvious prestige. Language diversity, however, is closely linked to the social values linked to diversity. They are both based on issues of identity and the way in which social actors understand their own and human role in late modernity.
