Although the island of Tory has been a stronghold of the Irish language for centuries, unlike other Gaelic islands off the coast of Ireland, this island does not have a reputation for writing. For this reason, we warmly welcome this wonderful novel from one of the islanders, Séamus Mac a ’Bháird, written in the first quarter of the last century.
It is an exceptional book in many ways: a story about the tragic life of Paidí Pheadair from the ends of the earth, a story full of adventure, a life of a kind that we do not normally meet in Irish literature and that is written in a rich Tory dialect that is not on the mouths of larger people.
