J. Robert Oppenheimer was a gifted student, a writer of poetry and fluent in many languages. He was also one of the great leaders of science in the 20th century. During the Second World War he was responsible for the creation of a powerful nuclear weapon that destroyed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In his later years he warned the world about the danger of nuclear weapons and was punished by his own government for his views.
This is the story of Oppenheimer – the ‘Father of the Atomic Bomb’ – ‘The Destroyer of Worlds’. It is also a story of hope, as the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (the Hibakusha) continue to campaign around the world for an end to nuclear weapons.
