In the summer of 2023, playwright Bernadette MacFarland sat down with female relatives of the thirteen men shot dead on Bloody Sunday and listened to their stories. These recorded interviews formed the basis of her acclaimed play, 4 Days in Derry, which portrays the atrocity from the perspective of the women - mothers, wives, sisters and daughters - whose lives were torn apart when their loved ones were mercilessly gunned down by British troops while marching for civil rights on January 30, 1972.
Journalist and editor Mary-Anne McNulty was granted access to the audio tapes and has produced written narratives of the women’s testimonies. These raw, unflinching accounts of the devastating impact of Bloody Sunday have now been committed to print, preserving a vital piece of oral history for future generations.
* Included in this special print edition is a transcript of the play
